Proposition 1
Proposition 1 is "The legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only". The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, (TABC), uses this designation to allow cities to sell beer and wine off the shelf, but only in grocery and convenience stores.
Proposition 1 does not allow the retail sale of liquor or liquor stores.
The antiquated laws that keep beer and wine out of our supermarkets are forcing residents to drive outside the city limits to shop. That means less convenience and less variety for UP citizens. Residents in our city want to enjoy the same freedoms that most Americans enjoy.
Proposition 2
Proposition 2 is "The legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants for food and beverage certificate holders only". The TABC uses this designation to allow cities to sell glasses of beer, wine and distilled spirits, but only in a restaurant.
Proposition 2 does not allow stand alone bars. Only restaurants that derive 50% or more of their income from food sales will be allowed to operate.
Our popular, family oriented restaurants have long served a variety of alcoholic beverages. However, the outdated laws force restaurant patrons to join a "Private Club" in order to do so. Residents should not have to give up their name , address, telephone number and drivers license number simply to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. Proposition 2 brings residents freedom from unneccesary bureaucracy in our restaurants.
